From smartphones, to smart watches, and cars that can drive themselves — the century we live in is dominated by technology and its forever increasing at a rapid pace.

Do you remember when your cell phone could only dial, and to text you had to press the number “1” button three times to get to the letter C, and the only game that your phone most likely had was “snake”?

Long gone are the days of simple cell phones. The average person today is walking around with a hand held supercomputer in their pocket. We are able to talk to our phones and actually get a response back. Some people’s phones are their best friend — LOL.

The arms race for new technology is in high gear and with that demand comes a new skill set that must be acquired….(if you wanna keep up)

According to a study done by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, there will be about a 30% increase of software development positions available between 2016 to 2026.

Then, another study done by Burning Glads Labor Insights, reported that there were more than 227,000 software development job listings in quarter 2 of 2018 compared to the 176,530 during the same period in 2017. That’s an increase of more than 50,000 job listings!

So, clearly there is no lack of job openings, but rather a lack of people to fill them.

Maybe you’re thinking, that sounds great, but I’m passionate about plants or bugs. Well don’t fret — you could work for any company because every company now a days is technology dependent. Blending your passion and working as a software developer is possible.

For example, I am super passionate about animals. I can take my passion for animals and work for a company like Petco, 1–800PetMeds, or the National Zoo, or….well you get the point. The list could go on and on.

Any company or business that is relevant has a need for someone like YOU!

But, you may be in the other boat of….well that’s great for some, but I want to own my own business. Well, awesome! Software engineering/ development can achieve that desire, too!

Just think, you just came up with a BRILLIANT idea and want to start a company that helps send money to friends and family ( — this already exists, but you get the jest) Buuuuut, in order to make that happen, 9 times out of 10 you’re gonna need someone on your team who can write code and turn that idea into an actual app or website (or both). Who better to do that than you! The CEO/genius mastermind/software developer.

You could also go freelance and create things for other people!

The possibilities are endless. Even if you just want to learn to code to make cool games, all the options listed above from this one skill set can open up a world of opportunities for you.

Welcome to the 21 century!
